Adventures in Calgrary

When it rains, it pours....

Ken is off working in Calgary again this week, but called home this morning. It was very strange to hear from in the the middle of the morning.

They awoke to rain.... not a big deal, but also a missing license plate off the back of their van. They had to take a quick trip report it stolen, and buy a new one. But they do not take Mastercard (company provided) and require him to pay a speeding ticket from someone else's company van in order to pay off the account, and then purchase a new plate.

As it goes... he has lost 3 hours of work this morning on a job that they are very far behind. Ken just recently learned that every school they have completed they now have to go back and redo part of it because they need to change the type of wire they are pulling. They now need to return all the boxes of wire, and get all new ones for the remaining schools. They have also been given a hard time about wearing safety goggles, and earplugs. This is on top of adding hours to the job by having to run every inch on wire in metal pipes they have to bend.

Good luck Ken.... maybe your job for the summer, will be finished before Christmas??!!!

Courtney Caught her first fish!

Courtney went out at 8:00 this morning to go fishing with Gramps. Nana Shortt also came to work the video camera.

It didn't take her long, but Courtney manages to hook, and reel in her first fish all by herself! It was a pike!

She then fished on the other side of the dam, with no railing, and caught another one with Gramps and Nana's help!

Look out, we just might have a talented fisher on our hands!

Uncle James's First Car Accident

Someone else ran a yield sign, and the front end of Uncle James's new car is now in a few pieces.

Everyone was fine, but the car could not be driven home from Cardston.

James was taking Nana, Gramps and Uncle Andew up to the temple to take some pictures. Guess they didn't make it....

Hopefully the car will be back on the road shortly!

Why I Homeschool

I have been searching for the purpose of Education. Just today I have found the following.....

SECTION 88

77 And I give unto you a commandment that you shall ateach one another the bdoctrine of the kingdom.
78 Teach ye diligently and my agrace shall attend you, that you may be binstructed more perfectly in theory, in principle, in doctrine, in the law of the gospel, in all things that pertain unto the kingdom of God, that are expedient for you to understand;
79 Of things both in aheaven and in the earth, and under the earth; things which have been, things which are, things which must bshortly come to pass; things which are at home, things which are abroad; the wars and the perplexities of the cnations, and the judgments which are on the land; and a dknowledge also of countries and of kingdoms—
80 That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to amagnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the bmission with which I have commissioned you.

I found it interesting that he is asking us for more then just gospel knowledge, but of all things, in heaven, in the earth and under the earth, countries, wars, history, and the future.

All so that we may be prepare for whatever mission or purpose he has for us. What a responsibility! I do hope that I can give my children the opportunity's they need to learn so that they will be ready for whatever comes their way.

Homeschooling allows us as a family, to build relationships, extensive knowledge, and values together in a way that respects each others individual talents, and worth.

Courtney Rides her Bike

Courntey wanted a new bike for her birthday back on April 30th. She saved her money, and purchased the bike. But for Months Courtney would not ride it. We had tried to put the seat down, and help her try and ride it, but she had a fear of riding it because the seat was too high.

Gramps was here and yesterday took her up and down the sidewalk. He managed to lower the seat more, and tilt it for her. He taught her how to use the kick stand, and the correct way to start and stop her new bike.

Now there is no stopping her!

Go! Courtney! Go!

Aunt Janay Stopped Over

Aunt Janay had her 20th Birthday. She surprised us, by stopping over in the evening and brought her own birthday cake to share with us! In her family an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen is a must.

The kids had made her some gifts earlier and were quite excited to give them to her on her REAL birthday.

Happy Birthday Aunt Janay!

Home School Learning for Mom

Today Mom went to a homeschooling conference. This is so she can learn to be a better homeschooling mom. This is one of the things we talked about.

It is from http://www.truelightacademy.com

The idea is to make a number of Emblem books. This will give a place for all the papers and learning things to all go into one place. It would be a way for kids to look back at all their learning of one subject and see what they have done in a year (Records to show the homeschool teachers to prove we actually homeschool) It will also allow the kids to see all the still could learn, could go, be inspired to learn more about. I am not sure we will do this , but maybe a version of this....

(An emblem is a symbol of something important)
These are just notebooks which can be spiral bound, hard bound, or loose pages in a decorated binder. Here are the 10 types of emblem books we use:

  1. Emblem Book of Eternal Edifications
    1. This notebook contains records of our spiritual learning (Beacons of Light and The Arts of the Gospel). We can record favourite scriptures, hymns learned, lists of spiritual books read, things we have memorized, artwork from narrations of scripture reading, records of devotionals, and so on.
  2. Emblem Book of Enduring Character
    1. This notebook is used to keep records of character traits learned, information on heroes & heroines who exemplify these traits, lists of books read and so on. (Beacons of Character)
  3. Emblem Book of Emotions & Empathy
    1. This notebook is used to keep records of our relationships with friends and family. Include letters written and received, cards received, photos, scrapbooked memories, even an address book.
  4. Emblem Book of Expectations
    1. This notebook is used to keep records of charts, schedules, routines, exercise plans, life skills learned and so on. Anything related to work, life skills, and healthy living. (The Arts of Physical Expression, The Arts of Life)
  5. Emblem Book of Endearing Service
    1. This notebook is used for keeping records of the Faith in God program, Cubs/Scouts, &/or Personal Progress. Record memories of enjoyable service projects, volunteer jobs, and acts of service done for you.
  6. Emblem Book for Encore
    1. This notebook is for keeping records of activities to do with the subjects we feel are essential at each age level -- music, reading, writing, logic, rhetoric, math, memorization, & foreign language study. This book would be divided into sections or may need to be split up into more than one notebook. Include anything worth saving in these areas... stories, poems, & papers written, lists of books read, book reviews, narrations, music learned, lists of musical terms, math equations, anything! (The Arts of Communication, The Arts of Thinking, The Arts of Mathematics, The Arts of Languages)
  7. Emblem Book of Enlightenment
    1. This notebook is a collection of quotes from great classics read in areas such as...history, poetry, literature, music, art, science and math.
  8. Emblem Book of Explorations
    1. This notebook(s) covers any exploration in any subject not covered in Encore. It can include a Book of Centuries, science experiments, nature notebooks, pictures from field trips and more. (The Arts of the Social Studies, The Arts of the Natural & Scientific World)
  9. Emblem Book of Expressions
    1. This notebook contains creations from The Arts of Cultural Expression: Music, Art, Drama, Dance & Theatre Arts, for example.
  10. Emblem Encyclopedia for a Mission in Life
    1. This notebook will most likely not be started before Age 12. It should begin when a child has personal inspiration toward a possible mission in life. This notebook should be filled with information gained in the pursuit of knowledge towards this mission. An Emblem Encyclopedia for a homeschool mother could be a notebook of all she has learned about homeschooling.
