Egyptian Daily Life.

Courtney has been working all week to teach the family about Daily Life in Ancient Egypt.

She made notes in a little notebook, and is using a favourite book to read many inserts, and tell us about life.

She told us about how the families would allow the children to spend their first years playing, so they will grow up healthy and strong. Then they would start to help their parents work. Kids also did not need to wear clothing, some boys actually went to school naked, and were not required to wear clothing until they were apprentice scribes.

She talked about how the father teaches his son math with real problem. Things like: 2,300,000 blocks of stone will be needed to build a pyramid, each boat brings 100 block of stones, and travels 1000 miles from Awan to Giza and back.

She had hoped that we would spend some time building and making some crafts together, but it was late, so we will have to try that another time.

She did show us some sticks that have hieroglyphics on them, that were part of a game that she made. She make the entire board, and the pieces, and sticks that are needed to play. We will make a point to play it with her tomorrow!

Then she showed us a music instrument that a young girl would learn to play if she was planing on becoming a Priestess in the temples.

It was a great glimpse as to everyday life.

It was a great presentation Courtney! Keep up all the learning and teaching!

Kenny wants to show off too!

The girls were presenting their Egyptian Projects.
Kenny surprised us by announcing that he also had a presention.
We asked what he knew about Egypt.
He replied, that he could throw a ball.
He then gave us a demonstration as to what a great thrower and catcher he was.

He did a great Job, and we are so happy that he wanted to share something he has being doing too!

Keep it up Kenny!

Given each other 5!

Sarah's Powerpoint

Sarah has been working all week on a Powerpoint Presentation. She decided she wanted to learn about Gods in Egypt.

She created an information page about each God, and then showed a picture. She has a few things to change, and then wants to publish it in a place for everyone to view.

She told us about Isis,
the Goddess of Nature. She sometimes wore a winged Headdress or had wings for arms.

Isis married Orisis. She explained that Osiris was the God of Agriculture. He was killed by his jealous brother, and so he become God of Underworld. He was the brother and husband of Isis. At that time Royalty had to only marry royalty (often a brother or sister) , so Egyptian Gods were believed to do the same.

Horus was the son of Isis and Osiris. He was the Sky God. Every morning he rode a boat through the sky to help push the sun through it.

Thoth was the God of wisdom and the inventor of picture writing .he was also the God of scribes.

Sarah did a great Job answer questions, and teaching the whole family what the Egyptians believed.

Acting it out

As part of Nicole's presentation, she had her brothers and sisters help to act out another story.

She had everyone help drag in the heavy blocks

Courtney even pushed.

Then she brought in the treasures, and food that were placed in the pyramid. She explained that they needed food, because the Egyptians believed they would eat it in the afterlife.

She then had everyone drag in the Mummy. This is Kenny, buried in a coffin.

She then pretended to be a grave robber. She sneaked into the pyramid, and stole the Mummy.

She then ground the mummy into powder that would be used as medicine.

You did a great job Nicole! What a great way to learn and teach the whole family!

Nicole has spent time this week learning about Pyramids. She had made her own little puppets. She put on a little play about how people died and were put in the pyramid. Then a grave robber came and stole all the treasure.

Toaster

Sarah noticed something very interesting today. As we were making toast for breakfast this morning, She's noticed the heat shadow on the wall. She quickly ran andI got the camera, so she could take pictures and showed it off.

We can't see the heat coming from the toaster, but when we look at the shadow we can see the heat rising. It didn't show very clear in the camera lens, and she was a little worried that you wouldn't see it in the video. I think you can if you look very closely.

This morning we woke up to snow outside our window.

It was gorgeous to see the snow glistening on the trees and on the ground. Sarah snapped a few pictures to show it off.

This afternoon, there is absolutely no snow left. The grass is even starting to green.

Spring must really be here!

When it rains it pours. First we need a new van, then we need a new dryer.

Daddy took the dryer apart to find out why it was no longer working properly. It would continually stay on and no longer turn off, which was not very safe thing to do. it heated up too much, and the whole house smelled bad..

So knowing we needed new parts, Daddy checked out the Internet, and he located several places locally that would provide the part. It seemed hard to locate a supplier who could get the part in within the next few weeks.

One location offered us a brand-new to us (six-month-old dryer) for just over double the cost of the part. That sounded like a really good deal to us!

Daddy pulled the seats down in the van and off he went to pick it up.

Amazingly enough, it dries clothes and only one cycle! Mommy is so use to having start the dryer two to three times just to get the jeans dry and twice for everything else.

Boy, we are spoiled! Now we can do laundry a lot faster, and it doesn't take three hours to wash and dry a single load.

We are certainly lucky!

Ideas

This is a picture of the front of our house. We are hoping to change it and make it more us. We also want to build a bigger porch with shade. This is a few of our ideas.
Please comment on which ideas you like the best!

Picture #1 -This is just adding the porch, and flowers in the front of the yard. We also were thinking of a large box infront of the porch full of flowers.
Picture #2 - This is taking the brown panelling off the top, and adding stone up the front part of the way. It also includes the deck, as well as flowers, we also added two flower boxes under the windows.
The other difference is taking out part of the driveway and just using a few stones to make a walk.

Picture #3 - This is the same porch idea, with flowers. This also has a dramatic paint job. It also gets rid of the entire 2nd driveway and places a picket fence around the yard. We love the idea of a little fence, but are unsure we want to get rid of the driveway entirely. But is does look cute!

Great Day for Outside Fun!

Adrain looks up as he poses for a picture.

Sarah complained that the sunshine was too hot! She changed into shorts before heading out again. What will happen when it is really hot and not just 23?

Daddy smiles while Sarah snaps a shot.

We are climbing the walls!

Daddy decided to show the kids how to climb the walls.
He hooked himself and Nicole up into a harness, and taught then to climb the walls of the garage.

The batteries, again died! AHHH!
So we only have the first kid, and not Courtney or Sarah. They used a double pulley system, so the kids could pull themselves up, and Daddy held the brake for them on the ground.

Kenny was not interested in trying it.

After that, Daddy showed them how even he can climb the walls!

What could be better then this?

Every time the kids go outside to play they all race for to swing. This time Adrian took his turn. He loved it, and Courtney ran into the house to grab a Camera and take these pictures.

Good picture taking Courtney!

Climbing the ladder

Daddy put up the ladder to take a ball off the roof, and then set it up for the kids to climb. Mommy took pictures through the window of Kenny climbing.
Then Adrian wanted to climb, and with no fear, he made it up to the very top.
Sarah and Courtney also get into the picture, with Kenny on the other side of the ladder.
Adrian didn't want to come down. He loved the veiw, and spent his time up there pointing out all the cars he could see as they went by.

Sarah's Project

We were studying History, and the trading of goods between Babylon and Assyria. We discovered that carts at that time were make of wood, and that the wheels would not last long. The trip to Assyria was rocky in some parts, and sandy in other places. So the preferred method of travel was the river.

The thought of the carts pulled by oxen or cows really appealed to Sarah, so she made her own, and had Nicole model it for her so she could take pictures.
